The value of working with a specialist vs a do-it-all

The value of working with a specialist vs a do-it-all

Here’s something some of you might not know: I am a web designer/developer who outsources graphic design and branding services.

And I’m going to tell you why this is rad news for your business and why it will save you money.

Here’s the deal. Per one of my favorite books, Gay Hendrick’s “The Big Leap,” we all have:

  • A zone of genius (things we’re a natural genius at, drawing upon our special gifts + strengths)

  • A zone of excellence (stuff we’re great at)

  • A zone of competence (things we’re okay at which others can do just as well)

  • A zone of incompetence, a.k.a. suckiness (for me, anything to do with putting together furniture or wearing stilettos)

Now, I’ve studied web design, web development, and branding and used Illustrator, Photoshop, and many other tools over the years, and this is what I’ve learned:

My zone of genius lies in web development (writing code using languages specific to the web and using the best tools to ensure the site works smoothly — this is why I’m so anal about specifics and ask lots of questions!) followed by web design (using principles of design and the graphics my designers make for my clients to create a killer look + feel for the website and make it user-friendly).

Graphics and branding? Ehh… those I’d say fall more in my zone of competence. And since I don’t want to give you a shitty product, I let graphic design experts and branding experts do that part, so I can do what I’m an expert at.

The value of working with a specialist vs a do-it-all

So what’s the value of working with a specialist vs a do-it-all?

When you hire Website Superhero, every element of your website is put together by a specialist in their field.

In other words, instead of having one person half-ass every element of your website, you have a few people all full-assing your website. In even more words, every aspect of your website will have been crafted by someone who knows their shiz, so you won’t end up needing to spend money later to fix someone’s mistakes.

It’s kinda like giving a dress to your half-blind and senile grandmother to hem instead of taking it to a tailor (my grandma preferred watching Latin soap operas, but you know) or asking the construction workers who built your house to also be your interior decorators. It just may not work out so well… and you may have to re-do things later, spending even more money to fix errors they didn’t know they were making.

And that makes sense. Because nobody’s a genius at everything.

When you hire me, you’re not only getting a website that’s the cat’s pajamas, but you’re also preventing hiccups and problems resulting from messy code or the ineptitude that will lead many to ignore best practices and get you into tech trouble.

Working with a specialist looks like this:

  • We have an amazing “Let’s get to know each other” chat. I help you figure out what you really need to move your business forward online while being smart about money & crucial business needs. I’ll never push or encourage you to buy something you don’t need.

  • I and if needed my team of experts will all contribute our zones of genius to making your online business legendary.

  • As a project manager, I will keep your project smooth, excelling, and on time. You will only ever have to deal with one person — you don’t need extra headaches and emails in your inbox! Imma make this easy and delicious as double chocolate chip pie for ya! (Gluten- and dairy-free if you prefer, that’s right!)

So instead of spending extra cash to fix unnecessary mistakes, you can have a fancy anniversary celebration with your partner or stay at a nicer hotel on your vacation. Mmm. Vacation.

  1. Yay! You’re so on point with this post. I really need to learn to let go and let someone else do the things I’m crap at – or just don’t have time for!

And, I love your mermaid photo — brought up great memories from when I visited Copenhagen many moons ago!!

    • Ohhh my god, you are going to feel SO. RELIEVED. when you delegate those things. I’m not even kidding. Glad my post is reinforcing what you already know and need to hear more, apparently? Haha :)

Me too! I was in Copenhagen last year. Funny how such a small statue is such a big deal for us tourists :D

  2. I like this part: I help you figure out what you really need to move your business forward online while being smart about money & crucial business needs. I’ll never push or encourage you to buy something you don’t need.

    • Thank you! It’s only fun and productive if everyone’s 100% in, you know? I only want to work with people who will give it their all and are fully ready to succeed :)

  3. Interesting point! If the person feels like all of their self is in (including the money self) than they will be fully ready to succeed. I like it!

  4. Ok you need to make that “full-assing” comment a tweetable! Hilarious. This is a great post and it’s awesome that you found a reliable team of branding and design peeps to work alongside you. It’s like a mini-agency. Amazing!
